Windsurf Alternatives in 2026: What to Use After Devin Desktop

Windsurf's editor has been renamed Devin Desktop. Its official page says the IDE, settings and existing plans carry over, so the rebrand alone does not force a migration.

01

The name change in plain terms

The product formerly known as Windsurf is now presented as Devin Desktop. Its official page says the existing IDE foundation remains available while an agent command center becomes more prominent. It also states that current plans, settings and extensions carry over through the update. This is a significant branding and interface direction, but it does not mean every Windsurf user must abandon the editor immediately. Confirm your installed version and current plan before making a migration decision.

A rebrand can still matter to your workflow. You may prefer a focused editor over a multi-agent board, or you may welcome central control of several agent tasks. The right question is not whether the logo changed. It is whether the updated product still supports your extensions, language tools, provider setup and review habits at a price you accept.

02

What Devin Desktop emphasizes

Devin Desktop describes an Agent Command Center with Spaces, Kanban and multi-agent management. These features target a workflow in which several agents or tasks are visible and coordinated. The full IDE remains in the product, according to the official transition page. Test that claim against your real project: open the same repository, find the features you use daily and complete a normal edit-and-test cycle. A new home screen may feel unfamiliar without removing the underlying capability.

If you regularly delegate independent tasks and need a central view of progress, the new surface may be an advantage. If you mainly ask one assistant for help while editing code manually, the extra coordination layer may feel unnecessary. The choice is about task shape. Do not assume that a tool optimized for many agents is automatically better for a single careful refactor.

03

Cursor, Licuse and Cline as alternatives

Cursor is a dedicated AI editor with bundled model plans, BYOK options and mature editor features. It is a natural comparison if you still want an integrated AI coding environment. Licuse is a beta code-and-design IDE with direct BYOK for OpenRouter, OpenAI and Anthropic. It may appeal if you want project notes close to code in a standalone workspace, but you should verify your required extensions and platform support. Cline lets you keep another supported editor while changing the agent and provider layer.

These options serve different priorities. Cursor may fit teams willing to pay for a broader integrated editor. Cline offers provider breadth and local-model options. Licuse focuses on one workspace for code and UI design. None is a universal successor to Windsurf; the relevant differences are interface, model path, permission controls and the cost of your actual workload.

04

Do a migration rehearsal, not a forced switch

Create a test checkout and export any settings you cannot afford to lose. Install the candidate alongside Devin Desktop rather than replacing your working environment. Check language servers, debugging, terminal behavior, Git integration, extensions and keyboard shortcuts. Then repeat one recent task from a clean branch. The trial should include a failed test or change request, because recovery often reveals a tool's real ergonomics.

Keep the acceptance criteria independent of the product. The same bug should be fixed, the same tests should pass and the same sensitive files should remain protected. Compare the final diffs and the number of times you had to steer the agent. A smooth initial generation followed by a difficult repair is not a strong migration result.

05

Billing and data path after the transition

Devin Desktop's official page lists Free, Pro and Max tiers and says existing Windsurf plans retain their pricing during the rebrand. Details can change, so read the live plan page before upgrading. Compare included usage, possible overage and any distinct charges for agent features. Licuse's BYOK shifts model billing to your provider account; Cursor and Cline have their own combinations of subscription and provider charges.

For privacy, map the route of code context in the mode you actually use. A local editor can still send snippets to hosted model providers. An external agent or MCP tool may add another recipient. Read the product's current policy, configure permissions and test on non-sensitive work first. Avoid basing a data decision on the new or old brand name.

06

When the best option is to stay

If Devin Desktop preserves your working extensions, plan and editing flow, staying may be the lowest-risk choice. Explore the updated interface before assuming it has changed everything. You can still evaluate Cline, Codex or another agent as a complement for tasks that the built-in experience handles poorly. Migration is useful only when it removes measurable friction.

If the command-center direction conflicts with the way you work, choose a candidate that addresses that specific issue. A focused code-and-design IDE may reduce interface noise; an extension may preserve an existing editor; a terminal agent may support task delegation without changing the workspace. Keep your projects backed up and review the final code under any tool. The renamed product is one option among several, not an emergency deadline.

07

Preserve a way back

Before moving an important repository, record your current editor version and settings and make sure normal Git history is clean. Install the alternative without deleting Devin Desktop. Use a separate profile where possible so extension state and shortcuts do not collide. After a week, ask whether the new tool improved a repeated task or merely required a new habit. If you return to the old editor, your code and UI design should still be accessible as ordinary project artifacts. A reversible pilot is especially valuable during a fast product transition.

THE TAKEAWAY

Try the renamed Devin Desktop first if you liked Windsurf; switch only for a specific workflow, provider or cost reason.
